2-minute anatomy picture quiz: name the highlighted muscle or bone

A 2-minute anatomy picture quiz: one muscle or bone is lit on a 3D picture and you pick its name. 5 questions, no account, then on to the full 3D quizzes.

This is a 2-minute anatomy picture quiz: each picture shows the human body in 3D with one muscle or bone highlighted, and you choose its name from four answers. Five questions, no account, and every answer links to a page that explains the structure.

Free quiz · 5 questions

Which structure is highlighted?

Each picture comes from the 3D atlas: one muscle or bone is lit, the rest of the body is see-through. Pick its name.

How does this picture quiz work?

Each round has five questions. The pictures are rendered by Anatomy Atlas 3D, a free 3D anatomy app for iPad and iPhone: the structure you need to name is lit, and the rest of the body is see-through around it, so you can see where it sits. The wrong answers are always the same kind of structure, and from the same region when possible, so you have to know the difference between, say, the soleus and the gastrocnemius rather than between a bone and a muscle.

After each answer you see the correct name, its Latin name, and a link to learn it. At the end you get your score and a short list of the structures to review.

What does the quiz cover?

The questions come from the muscles and bones explained on this site:

New structures join the quiz as their pages are published. For whole regions, the muscles of the shoulder and the bones of the foot pages list every member with its attachments.

How is it different from the 3D quizzes?

This picture quiz asks you to recognise a structure that is already highlighted, on a still picture. The 3D anatomy quizzes on this site go further: the body turns under your finger, you name a lit structure, find a named one, light up whole groups and, at the Advanced level, type the name. They cover 11 regions and 6 body systems, with a medal for each level.

The quiz in Anatomy Atlas 3D, the free app, works like a practical exam: it names a structure and you find it by tapping the 3D body, which you can turn, zoom and peel layer by layer. It runs 15 questions per round, by region (head, neck, thorax, abdomen, pelvis, upper limb, lower limb) and by system, and covers far more structures than this page.

How to get more out of it

  • Say the Latin name out loud when it appears: exams and textbooks use both.
  • Open the page of every structure you miss and look at its origin and insertion; a muscle is easier to place once you know which bones it joins.
  • Play several rounds: each one draws a new set of five questions.
  • Move to the 3D quizzes when you get five out of five: finding a structure yourself is the harder, more useful skill.
