How we picked
Medical students need anatomy three times: in the first-year course and dissection lab, again when imaging and clinical skills start, and once more before board exams. We kept the iPhone and iPad apps a medical student is likely to meet: the 3D atlases of the main anatomy publishers, one imaging atlas and a free newcomer. We read each US App Store listing on October 27, 2026 and compared:
- Depth: how many structures or images, and whether cross sections and imaging are included.
- Teaching content: courses, videos, quizzes, muscle attachments and innervation.
- Price model: free, one-time or subscription, as listed, with the student price when there is one.
- Practical limits: account, offline use, minimum iOS version, download size, date of the last update.
We did not run hands-on tests of the other apps, so this page reports what each developer lists.

Complete Anatomy for iPad
The listing describes it as built for medical students, teachers and clinicians: full female and male gross anatomy models you rotate, isolate and dissect layer by layer, 12 body systems with cross sections, real-time muscle motion, nerve and blood supply tracing, bone landmarks, more than 20 microscopic anatomy models, guided courses (dissection, human anatomy, point-of-care ultrasound, clinical correlates), 150+ hours of lectures and 1,500+ clinical videos.
- Suits: students who want one platform for anatomy, histology, imaging and clinical content, and whose school may already pay for it.
- Limits: after the 3-day trial it needs a license. The App Store lists a Student License and a Student Plus License at $74.99, an Individual License at $59.99 and Professional licenses at $99.99 to $119.99. It is a 1.5 GB download, needs iPadOS 18, and the iPhone version is a separate app with its own purchases. If the price is the problem, see our Complete Anatomy alternatives.
Human Anatomy Atlas 2027 (Visible Body)
A gross anatomy atlas sold once. Its listing includes full female and male 3D models shown alongside cadaver and diagnostic images, organs at several levels of detail (lungs down to alveoli, kidneys down to nephrons), movable muscle and bone models with actions, landmarks, attachments, innervation and blood supply, fascia and compartments, dissection in AR and in cross sections, 3D dissection quizzes and presentation tools.
- Suits: students who prefer paying $24.99 once to a yearly license and want cadaver and imaging views next to the models.
- Limits: physiology animations and dental anatomy are separate purchases ($7.99 to $19.99). It is a 1.3 GB download. See also Visible Body alternatives.
Essential Anatomy 5
The earlier atlas from the makers of Complete Anatomy, with more than 8,200 structures listed, sold for $19.99 once with two optional $4.99 add-ons (Muscle System Plus, Skeletal System Plus).
- Suits: students who want a large 3D reference without a subscription and already know their way around anatomy.
- Limits: the App Store shows its last update in January 2022 and English only. Check that it runs on your current iOS before buying.
Anatomy Learning - 3D Atlas
An atlas whose listing names students of medicine, nursing, physiotherapy and dentistry: more than 6,000 labeled points on a 3D model, layer-by-layer dissection, muscle and joint animations, cross-sectional anatomy for radiology and over 500 quizzes, offline and in ten languages.
- Suits: students who study in a language other than English, or who want a deep atlas for a one-time $16.99.
- Limits: the full content needs the Definitive Edition, and the listing describes no courses or videos.
BioDigital Human
A library of more than 700 3D models covering anatomy, physiology, health conditions and treatments, also used in a web browser at human.biodigital.com.
- Suits: students who want disease and treatment models next to normal anatomy, for patient explanations or case-based courses.
- Limits: the free version is capped at 10 model views a month and 5 saved models; unlimited access is $19.99 a year, and you register an account.
IMAIOS e-Anatomy
Not a 3D model but an imaging atlas: more than 26,000 labeled images in axial, coronal and sagittal series, radiographs, angiography, dissection photographs and illustrations, with labels in 12 languages including the Latin Terminologia Anatomica. The listing addresses physicians, radiologists, medical students and radiology technicians.
- Suits: students starting radiology or clinical rotations who need to recognize structures on scans, and anyone revising cross-sectional anatomy.
- Limits: a subscription ($21.99 a month or $132.99 a year, which also opens the IMAIOS website), a 2.3 GB download with further downloads for full use, and iOS 16.6. The app is rated 16+ and states that its content is meant for healthcare professionals.
Anatomy Atlas 3D (our app)
Anatomy Atlas 3D is a free 3D human anatomy atlas for iPad and iPhone: 2,000 structures, no account, no ads, works offline, English and Latin names (Terminologia Anatomica 2) and a tap-the-structure quiz. The body comes in six layers you peel in one swipe, you can cut cross sections along three planes, open organs part by part in the organ explorer and switch between male and female bodies. Muscles open a card with origin, insertion, action and innervation, the four facts a first-year exam asks for.

- Suits: first-year students who need to find and name structures quickly, revise origins and insertions and test themselves before a practical, with no budget.
- Limits: anatomy only. No courses, lectures, histology, cadaver images or radiology like the paid leaders, no App Store ratings yet, and it needs iOS 18 or later on iPad or iPhone.
Which anatomy app do you need in which year?
- First year, gross anatomy and the dissection lab: a 3D atlas you can open fast between the tables. Complete Anatomy if your school provides it, otherwise Human Anatomy Atlas, Anatomy Learning or our free atlas. Check that it works offline if the lab has poor Wi-Fi.
- Learning muscles for the practical: the app must show origin, insertion, action and innervation on the model, and quiz you on structures rather than on names. Our deltoid and muscles of the shoulder pages show what that looks like, and our list of the best anatomy apps for physiotherapy students compares apps for muscles and movement.
- Imaging and clinical rotations: cross-sectional anatomy matters more than surface anatomy. Complete Anatomy and Human Anatomy Atlas include radiology or diagnostic images; IMAIOS e-Anatomy is built around them.
- Board exam revision: many medical students pair an atlas with spaced-repetition flashcards. AnkiMobile ($24.99 once on the App Store, with free sync to the open-source desktop Anki) is the usual choice; it is a flashcard engine, not an anatomy app, so you bring or download the decks.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best anatomy app for medical students?
It depends on who pays and how far you are. With a school license, Complete Anatomy, which goes beyond the models into courses, imaging and clinical videos. Paying yourself, a one-time atlas (Human Anatomy Atlas 2027 or Anatomy Learning) or the free Anatomy Atlas 3D for the first year, then an imaging atlas when rotations start.
Is there a free anatomy app for medical students?
Yes. Anatomy Atlas 3D has no in-app purchase at all, so the whole atlas, the cross sections and the quiz are free. Other apps on this list are free to download but unlock their content with a purchase or a subscription; our best free anatomy apps page sorts them.
Is Complete Anatomy worth it for medical students?
If your school pays for it, use it: nothing else on this list combines 3D models, courses, dissection videos and radiology. If you pay yourself, compare the Student License ($74.99 as listed) with a one-time atlas and a free quiz app, and start with the 3-day trial.
Which anatomy app is best for radiology and cross sections?
IMAIOS e-Anatomy, built from labeled axial, coronal and sagittal image series, radiographs and angiography. Complete Anatomy and Human Anatomy Atlas add diagnostic images to their 3D models, and Anatomy Learning and Anatomy Atlas 3D cut cross sections through the 3D body.
Do I need Anki for anatomy?
Not for the atlas part, but many medical students use AnkiMobile for recall: $24.99 once, with free synchronization to the desktop version. Use a 3D app to understand where a structure is, then flashcards to keep the name and the facts.
Which anatomy app works offline in the dissection lab?
Anatomy Learning and Anatomy Atlas 3D state in their listings that they work without an internet connection (what free and offline mean here). For the others, check the listing or the developer's site before relying on them in a lab without Wi-Fi.
