The best anatomy apps for iPad in 2026

Seven 3D anatomy apps for iPad compared from their App Store listings in October 2026: Complete Anatomy, Visible Body, BioDigital, Anatomy Learning, TeachMe Anatomy, Anatomy 3D Atlas and Anatomy Atlas 3D. Price model, content and limits.

An iPad is the best screen most students have for 3D anatomy: big enough to turn a model and read its label side by side, light enough to bring to the dissection lab. The hard part is choosing an app, because "free" on the App Store often means a trial or a paywall.

Quick answer

  • Most complete, if you can pay a yearly license: Complete Anatomy for iPad. Courses, dissection videos, radiology and muscle motion on top of the 3D models.
  • Best one-time purchase: Human Anatomy Atlas 2027 by Visible Body, $24.99 once, with a large set of 3D models, AR and quizzes.
  • Best fully free option: Anatomy Atlas 3D (our app). The whole atlas with no subscription, no account and no ads, offline. It is new and simpler than the paid leaders.

How we picked

We kept apps that run natively on iPad, show the body in 3D (not only diagrams) and are aimed at students. For each one we read the App Store listing on the same day and compared:

  1. Price model: what is free, what is paid, one-time or subscription.
  2. Content: 3D structures, systems, layers, cross sections.
  3. Study tools: quizzes, flashcards, muscle origins and insertions.
  4. Practical limits: account, offline use, minimum iPadOS version, download size.

We did not run hands-on benchmarks of the competing apps, so this page reports what each developer lists, not our test results.

Complete Anatomy for iPad

The most feature-rich option on the list. Its listing describes male and female gross anatomy models, 12 body systems with cross sections, real-time muscle motion, nerve and blood supply tracing, bone landmarks, guided courses, dissection videos and radiology.

  • Suits: medical students and clinicians who want one platform for the whole curriculum and whose school may pay for a license.
  • Limits: after the 3-day trial, the content sits behind a license ($59.99 to $119.99 depending on the tier, as listed). It is a 1.5 GB download, and the iPhone version is a separate app.

Human Anatomy Atlas 2027 (Visible Body)

A long-standing reference with a simple deal: you pay once and keep it. The listing includes full female and male models, organs at several levels of detail, muscle actions, attachments, innervation and blood supply, augmented reality, cross sections, 3D dissection quizzes and presentation tools.

  • Suits: students who prefer a one-time purchase over a subscription, and teachers who present in class.
  • Limits: $24.99 up front, with physiology animations and dental anatomy sold separately ($7.99 to $19.99).

BioDigital Human

A large library of more than 700 3D models covering anatomy, health conditions and treatments, also usable in a web browser.

  • Suits: students and educators who also want disease and treatment models, or who work on a computer as much as on the iPad.
  • Limits: the free version is capped at 10 model views a month and 5 saved models; unlimited access is $19.99 a year. You register an account to use it.

Anatomy Learning - 3D Atlas

A 3D atlas with more than 6,000 labeled points, layer-by-layer dissection, muscle and joint animations, cross-sectional anatomy and over 500 quizzes. It works offline and comes in ten languages.

  • Suits: students who want a deep atlas in their own language and are happy to pay once.
  • Limits: the full content needs the Definitive Edition, a one-time $16.99 purchase.

TeachMe Anatomy

The app version of the TeachMeAnatomy website: more than 600 written anatomy articles, 750+ interactive 3D models, illustrations, dissection images, 1,900+ quiz questions and 2,500+ flashcards.

  • Suits: students who learn by reading first and use 3D models as support.
  • Limits: premium is a subscription, from $35 a month to $132.99 a year, or $274.99 for lifetime access. English and Spanish only.

Anatomy 3D Atlas (Catfish Animation Studio)

Detailed 3D models across the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, nervous, respiratory, digestive, urogenital, endocrine, lymphatic and sensory systems.

  • Suits: visual learners who want polished models of every system.
  • Limits: premium is sold as weekly, monthly or yearly plans or a $29.99 full version, and the app is close to a 1 GB download.

Anatomy Atlas 3D (our app)

Our app is a free 3D atlas built for iPad first. You tap any structure to see its English and Latin name, and muscles open a card with origin, insertion, action and innervation. The body comes in six layers you peel in one swipe, with section planes, an organ explorer and a quiz that works like the practical exam.

  • Suits: students who want the whole atlas without a subscription, an account or ads, and who revise offline. See what free means here.
  • Limits: it is new, so it has no App Store ratings yet. It has no courses, animations, AR or radiology like the paid leaders, it is in English only and it needs iPadOS 26.

How to choose

  • Your school provides a license: use it. Ask your anatomy department before buying anything.
  • You pay yourself and want everything: compare the yearly cost of a subscription with Visible Body's one-time $24.99 or Anatomy Learning's $16.99.
  • You want to start today for free: pick an app whose free version is the full atlas, not a trial. Then try the paid ones when you know what you miss.
  • You revise muscles: check that the app shows origins and insertions, like our deltoid page or the muscles of the shoulder table do.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best anatomy app for iPad?

It depends on budget. From their listings, Complete Anatomy is the most complete if you can pay a yearly license, Visible Body's Human Anatomy Atlas is the strongest one-time purchase at $24.99, and Anatomy Atlas 3D is a fully free 3D atlas with no subscription.

Is there a free anatomy app for iPad without a subscription?

Yes. Anatomy Atlas 3D has no in-app purchase at all. Several other apps are free to download but unlock their full content with a purchase or a subscription, so check the "In-App Purchases" section of the App Store listing before you start.

Is Complete Anatomy free on iPad?

The download is free and comes with a 3-day trial. After that, the App Store lists licenses from $59.99 to $119.99.

Do anatomy apps work offline on iPad?

Some do. Anatomy Learning and Anatomy Atlas 3D state that they work without an internet connection. For the others, check the listing or the developer's site before relying on them in a lab without Wi-Fi.

Should I use an iPad or an iPhone for anatomy?

An iPad is easier: the model and its label fit side by side, and small structures are easier to tap. Most apps on this list run on both.
