The best apps to learn muscles and bones in 2026
Seven apps to learn the muscles and bones compared from App Store listings on November 4, 2026: origin and insertion, 3D quizzes, animations, price.
The best free app to learn the muscles and bones is Anatomy Atlas 3D (our app): tap a muscle on a 3D body to read its origin, insertion and action, then test yourself in a quiz, on iPad or iPhone with no account or ads. The best paid picks are Human Anatomy Atlas 2027 ($24.99 once) for a full dissectible atlas and Muscle & Motion: Anatomy ($69 a year) for animated muscles.
Quick answer
- Free: Anatomy Atlas 3D (our app). Among the free apps here, it is the one that lists origin, insertion and action on a card for each muscle, and it has nothing to buy.
- One payment: Human Anatomy Atlas 2027, $24.99. It is the actively updated paid atlas on this list, and it covers organs as well as muscles and bones.
- Muscles in motion: Muscle & Motion: Anatomy. A free tier, then $12 a month or $69 a year.
How we picked
We kept apps that teach the muscles, the bones or both, and left out workout trackers. Complete Anatomy, BioDigital and TeachMe Anatomy also cover this ground, but they are general platforms with subscriptions, so we compare them in our Complete Anatomy alternatives page. For each app we read the US App Store listing on November 4, 2026 and compared:
- Coverage: muscles, bones, or the whole body.
- What you learn about a muscle: origin, insertion, action, innervation. This criterion decides our picks, because exams ask for these facts.
- How you test yourself: finding a structure on a body, naming it, flashcards.
- Price model and practical limits: what is free, the last update, Latin names.
We did not run hands-on tests of the other apps, so this page reports what each developer lists.

Anatomy Atlas 3D (our app)
Anatomy Atlas 3D is a free 3D human anatomy atlas for iPad and iPhone: 2,000 structures, no account, no ads, works offline, English and Latin names, and a tap-the-structure quiz. For the muscles, tap one to open its muscle card with its action, origin and insertion. For most muscles you can also show those attachments on the bones, to see which bone it pulls. To reach the bones, peel the muscle layer away. The quiz names a structure and you find it on the body.

- Suits: students who want one free app for the whole course, and anyone preparing a practical.
- Limits: no animations of muscles in motion, only a few ligaments, no flashcard decks. It needs iOS 18 or later and is designed for iPad and iPhone (no Android).
Human Anatomy Atlas 2027
Visible Body's atlas sells for one payment and has a male and a female model. For this topic, it lists models of muscles and bones that you can move, plus the landmarks and attachments you need to memorize. Dissection on screen and in augmented reality, cross sections and quizzes come with it.
- Suits: students who want one paid app that also covers organs and microanatomy.
- Limits: $24.99 up front. Patient education animations ($19.99), advanced animations ($9.99) and dental models ($7.99) are extra purchases. Our Visible Body alternatives page compares it with other options.
Muscle & Motion: Anatomy
A movement app. Instead of a whole-body atlas, it animates muscles as they work and explains what happens at each joint, with a muscle's attachments and action shown in 3D.
- Suits: kinesiology and sports science students, physiotherapists and coaches.
- Limits: the free tier opens part of the content, and the listing does not say which part. Full Access is $12 a month or $69 a year. It does not list a quiz.
Muscles & Kinesiology
A second Visible Body app, narrowed to how muscles and bones work together. It adds what the general atlas leaves aside for this topic: muscle action animations and models of common injuries and conditions, next to attachments and bony landmarks.
- Suits: kinesiology students and practitioners who want the musculoskeletal system without the rest of the body.
- Limits: $24.99, and the listing shows no update since September 2022, so check that it runs on your device before you pay. The store page shows no in-app purchase, while its description still mentions one for pathology animations.
3D Bones and Muscles (Anatomy)
A free 3D app with no in-app purchase, from the maker of Visual Anatomy. It is the free option here that lists ligaments, and it pronounces the bone names aloud. You can peel away muscles and take location quizzes.
- Suits: students who want a second free 3D model, or who want ligaments at no cost.
- Limits: the listing does not mention origins, insertions or muscle actions, and its privacy label names third-party advertising.
Bones of the body
A small trainer for bone names. The list grows as you answer correctly, and bones you miss return more often. One mode asks you to find a bone, and the other asks you to name a highlighted bone among look-alikes.
- Suits: first-year students working through the skeleton, for example the bones of the hand and the bones of the foot.
- Limits: no muscles. The full version and ad removal are $0.99 each.
AMTA Massage Anatomy Guide
From the American Massage Therapy Association and Books of Discovery. It is a deck of illustrated cards on muscles, bones, joints and movements, with tests by multiple choice and by locating structures.
- Suits: massage therapy students and practitioners.
- Limits: the listing says the resource is free to AMTA members, so check what you can open without a membership. No 3D model is listed.
How to choose
- You want to spend nothing: Anatomy Atlas 3D (our app) for muscle cards and the tap quiz, plus 3D Bones and Muscles if you need ligaments. Our best free anatomy apps page lists more.
- You must know origins and insertions: pick an app that lists them. On this site, the muscles of the forearm, muscles of the shoulder and other area tables give the origin, insertion and action of the muscles they cover.
- You study movement: Muscle & Motion: Anatomy, or Muscles & Kinesiology if you prefer one payment and accept its age.
- You are a personal trainer or massage therapist: Muscle & Motion: Anatomy names both professions in its listing, and the AMTA guide is written for massage therapy.
- You only need the skeleton: Bones of the body, then the free bones quizzes on this site.
- Your course also has physiology: see the best anatomy and physiology apps.
